To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if, in order to harmonise provisions within the EEC, he will consider reducing the speed limit for coaches on motorways to 60 mph.

Seventy miles per hour on motorways is a safe speed limit for coaches in normal traffic and weather conditions. We are making regulations to require coaches to be fitted with speed limiters which will ensure this is not exceeded. There are no Community proposals for harmonised speed limits currently under consideration.
