To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what steps are being taken by the Civil Aviation Authority to determine whether alcohol or other drugs are being abused by those responsible for air safety; whether any screening tests for drug abuse have been conducted by the Civil Aviation Authority; and what is his policy on screening for alcohol abuse and other substance abuse by air traffic controllers and airline pilots.

The Civil Aviation Authority is wholly responsible for aviation safety regulation. I will ask the chairman of the authority to write to my hon. Friend.
