To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list in the Official Report the total costs to the health budget, including the employment of consultants and ancillary staff, of the maternity consultant units in Perth, Melrose and Forfar; and if he will list the total number of births per annum in each of these units, giving an average cost per birth per unit.

In 1985 (the latest year for which figures are available) the total number of births in the consultant unit at Perth royal infirmary was 1,159 and in the GP unit at the Fyfe Jamieson maternity home, Forfar, was 133. Data for the consultant unit at Melrose are not available because the hospital has not yet been commissioned. I regret that the other information requested is not held centrally.
