To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department when he expects to make a decision as to whether the Government data network is suitable for use by the police national computer; and if he will inform right hon. and hon. Members when his decision is made.

We shall be able to decide whether to use the Government data network for the police national computer when we are satisfied that the Government data network, if implemented, would meet the police national computer's requirements and that the terms and conditions for the supply of the service would be acceptable. We will inform the House at the proper time.
