To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what representations he has received in connection with the funding of research in universities since June 1987.

About 260 in response to the discussion document "A Strategy for the Science Base", issued by the Advisory Board for the Research Councils. Representations concerning the funding of individual universities frequently also make reference to research.

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what recent representations he has received about the level of funding for the universities; and if he will make a statement.

My right hon. Friend receives many representations bearing on university funding. As shown in table 12.1 of "The Government's Expenditure Plans 1988–89 to 1990–91" volume II (Cm 288) current provision for the universities is planned to increase by 7·9 per cent. between 1987–88 and 1988–89.
