To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the number of people held in police or magistrates' court cells in each of the last five years in England and Wales.

Annual averages are given in the table. Further details are published annually in "Prison Statistics England and Wales" at table 1.9 of the latest volume, for 1986 (Cm. 210), a copy of which is in the Library.
