To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what weight he attaches to parental choice in deciding upon school closures; how he applied this criterion specifically in the case of the closure of the Pilgrim school, Bedford; and if he will make a statement.

The Secretary of State's policy in respect of parental choice in the context of school reorganisation proposals is set out in DES circular 3/87. Friend took account of this with other relevant facts and arguments in reaching his decision.
