To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what assessment his Department has made of the role of the River Thames flood plains in preventing serious flooding.

[holding answer 10 March 1988]: It is for the water authorities to plan flood protection as they consider appropriate, and this Ministry is involved only when projects are proposed for grant approval.
