To ask the Secretary of State for Energy what discussions he has had with the Central Electricity Generating Board about withdrawal of funds from research into the decommissioning of nuclear power stations; and if he will take steps to prevent any delay in the Sellafield research project.

The CEGB's decision to withdraw its contribution towards the cost of UKAEA research into decommissioning of the Windscale advanced gas cooled reactor is a management matter for the board. The Department will be discussing with UKAEA the implications of the CEGB's decision in the course of negotiations on the authority's R and D programme.
