To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will update table 1(4) in annex A of the Hardman report, Cmnd. 5322, on Civil Service redeployment.
[holding answer 18 March 1988]: Information on the division between headquarters and non-headquarters staff is no longer held centrally. The latest available figures for population by region and for non-industrial Civil Servants are as follows:Canada,
(b) France, (c) Germany, (d) Italy, (e) Japan and (f) the United States of America, for a married couple with no children.
[pursuant to his reply, 16 March 1988, c. 566–68]: I regret that the figure for the level of gross income at which the top rate of tax becomes payable in the United Kingdom was wrongly given as £19,301. The figure is £23,396. The revised table is as follows:
Country
| Starting rate Per cent.

| Top rate threshold (£)
|
Canada | 25·5 | 5,003 | 43·5 | 25,000 |
