Mr. Gale
To ask the Secretary of State for the Horne Department if he will give figures for the number of stray dogs reported to the police in England and Wales during 1985–86 and 1986–87.
Mr. Douglas Hogg
No central record is kept of the number of stray dogs reported to the police. The information requested could, therefore, be obtained only at disproportionate cost.
Mr. Gale
To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many dogs were destroyed, annually, in England and Wales in each of the last 10 years.
Mr. Douglas Hogg
Dogs are destroyed by owners and by a wide variety of organisations and individuals. We have no information on the total numbers destroyed.
