To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what is his current policy towards the introduction of an oath for local authority members; when he expects to bring forward legislative proposals for such an oath; and if he will make a statement.

The Government are considering the introduction of a written declaration abjuring support for terrorist violence, as a condition of election to district councils in Northern Ireland. No final decision has yet been reached.
