To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if he will publish in the Official Report the number of people who have died from industrial diseases in (a) Scotland and (b) the United Kingdom in each year since 1978.

The available statistics are as shown. The numbers have been obtained by combining figures for death benefit awards under the industrial injuries and pneumoconiosis, byssinosis and miscellaneous diseases benefit schemes with figures of certifications that death was due to pneumoconiosis made under the workers' compensation scheme.
