To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many American visitors came to Britain in 1987; and how much they spent.

The information requested is not yet available for the whole of 1987. However, in the 12 months to September 1987, residents of the United States of America made 2,705,000 visits to the United Kingdom and spent £1,431 million. Comparable figures for 1986 are 2,342,000 and £1,253 million for visits and spending respectively.
