To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) if, pursuant to his answer to the hon. Member for Stretford of 28 March, he will give precise details of the date on which the Minister for Health the right hon. Member for Braintree (Mr. Newton) decided to refuse to meet a delegation of hon. Members about South Manchester health authority, having been asked to reconsider his decision to refer the matter to the Parliamentary Under-Secretary;(2) if, pursuant to his answer of 28 March, he will give details of the circumstances, including the means of communication by which he learned of the refusal of the hon. Member for Stretford to meet the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State about South Manchester health authority.

My decision not to see a delegation of hon. Members about South Manchester health authority after they had refused to meet my hon. Friend the Parliamentary Under-Secretary was made on 14 March 1988. It was conveyed over the telephone by my private office the same day to the hon. Member for Manchester, Withington (Mr. Bradley), who had requested the meeting on behalf of hon. Members and from whom my office learnt of the delegation's refusal to meet the Parliamentary Under-Secretary.
