Mr. Thurnham
To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what recent representations he has received about the irradiation of foodstuffs; and if he will make a statement.
Mr. Donald Thompson
I am still receiving some representations about the safety of food irradiation and the need for controls over the use of the technique. The Government have, of course, already made it clear that we need to be satisfied as to effective controls before there could be any question of lifting the present general prohibition — over which there would in addition be further consultation.
