To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will list the pathology laboratories which process smears resulting from the implementation of a computerised call and recall cervical cancer screening programme; if he will list the funded establishment for each of those laboratories; if he will list the total numbers of staff in post; and what arrangements have been made to recruit extra staff to deal with the increased work load generated by the implementation of this programme.

I refer the hon. Member to my reply to the hon. Member for Glasgow, Provan (Mr. Wray) on 23 February at columns 183–6 which listed NHS laboratories in England that dealt with cervical cancer smear tests. Information on the funded establishment for each laboratory is not collected centrally. Information for non-NHS laboratories is not available.The total number of trained staff reported by NHS laboratories in England as being in post on 31 December 1986 (the latest date for which figures are available) was as follows:
