To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many new jobs have been created in the north-west during the last 12 months, as a result of contracts for his Department.

Estimates of the number of jobs in the north-west related to new contracts placed by MOD in a particular year could not be derived except at disproportionate cost. In 1985/86, about 23,000 people are estimated to have been employed on work for my Department placed with main contractors in the north-west.
