To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what proportion of the forestry planting in Caithness and Sutherland undertaken by (a) the Forestry Commission and (b) Fountain Forestry has been of broadleaved trees in each year since 1 April 1981; and what proportion of the further planting proposals accepted for grant aid by him in the statement of 25 January will be of native broadleaved trees.
[holding answer 16 May 1988]: The information for Forestry Commission planting is as follows:
Year ended 31 March | Percentage of Total Area planted with Broadleaves |
1982 | 0·5 |
1983 | 0·6 |
1984 | 0·7 |
1985 | 1·2 |
1986 | 0·4 |
1987 | 4·0 |
1988 | 5·2 |
Precise figures in respect of broadleaved planting undertaken by Fountain Forestry are not readily available. However, since the Government's broadleaves policy statement of July 1985, the Forestry Commission requires that all private planting schemes should contain at least 5 per cent. broadleaves, wherever it is practicable to do so.
The planting prescriptions in the cases referred to by my right hon. and learned Friend in his statement of 25 January 1988 allow, on average, for over 5 per cent. broadleaves. Most of these broadleaves will be of native species.
To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list the names and areas of those parcels of land which were (a) submitted and (b) approved for forestry grant aid in the Dornoch forest district in 1987–88.
