To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will arrange for the carpet in the doorway of the room of the Opposition Chief Whip to he made safe; and if he will take steps to ensure that all floor coverings are in a safe condition.

[holding answer 17 May 1988]: The work was carried out on Friday 13 May, the earliest opportunity after it was reported, in which the room could be made available to the carpet layers. The incident demonstrates that the system for reporting requirements for repairs and for carrying them out works adequately and I have no plans to change the present arrangements.
