To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many overseas visitors visited regions other than London during the last period for which full figures are available.

It is estimated that, in 1986, overseas residents made approximately 7·9 million visits to the United Kingdom that included at least one night spent in a region outside London, which represents 57 per cent. of the total number of visits made that year. An equivalent estimate for 1987 will be available later this year.

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what is the number of schemes in receipt of funds administered under section 4 of the Development of Tourism Act 1969, during the years 1985, 1986 and 1987.

Figures are not available in the form requested. The numbers of projects in England to which section 4 assistance was offered were:
