To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what contribution the United Kingdom is making to the European Community's effort to select the most practical and internationally economically viable options to conserve the tropical hardwood forests.

The United Kingdom is playing a full part in the Community's discussion of these issues, which were raised both at the Council of Development Ministers on 21 November and at the Council of Environment Ministers on 28 November. We have provided the only expert on tropical forestry in the development directorate of the Commission.
