To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry whether he will raise with the President of Korea during his visit to the United Kingdom for trade talks his country's treatment of dogs and cats intended for human consumption and the need to end such practices before stronger trade links are developed.

[holding answer 1 December 1989]: While I share the hon. Member's concern about cruelty to animals, wherever it may occur, it is not an appropriate subject for trade talks. I am sure that the President of Korea will have noted the strong and justified views of the British public which were publicised extensively during his visit.
