To ask the Secretary of State for Energy what steps are being taken to assist the coal industry in reducing environmental pollution and using energy more efficiently.

The Government will provide up to £8 million towards the cost of British Coal's work on the topping cycle at Grimethorpe. This offers a 20 per cent, reduction in carbon dioxide emissions compared with coal fired stations which should make a significant contribution to combating the "greenhouse effect".
