To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many dogs are kept as domestic pets in the United Kingdom.

The Home Office collects no statistics on the numbers of domestic pets. A report prepared by the London School of Economics for the RSPCA in 1988 estimated the United Kingdom dog population to be 7ยท3 million.
