To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will initiate a study of the health effects on the work force of companies producing radioactive sources for the technologies to irradiate foods, in the light of the findings of the Gardner report on radiation effects.

I have been asked to reply. In its second and third reports the committee on medical aspects of radiation in the environment (COMARE) recommended that studies of the health of the offspring of radiation workers should be set up. The Government accepted these recommendations in full and are urgently considering a number of relevant research proposals.
