To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what information he has regarding the recent anti-Hungarian demonstrations in Slovakia and in Transylvanian cities in Romania.

We understand that there was a demonstration in Nove Zamky in Slovakia in mid-February, and that some anti-Hungarian sentiments were expressed at another in Bratislava on 5 March. In Romania in early February there were demonstrations and counter-demonstrations in Tirgu Mures and other Transylvanian towns about the issue of separate education for ethnic Hungarians, but we understand that there have been no further large demonstrations since then.

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations he has made to the Governments of Czechoslovakia and Romania regarding the recent anti-Hungarian demonstrations in both countries.

We have made no representations to the Governments of Czechoslovakia and Romania about demonstrations in those countries.
