To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what information he has on progress within the paper and pulp industry for the increased use of straw as a resource.

[holding answer 18 April 1990]: I am aware of a commercial venture which Berisford Bristar is investigating for the production of pulp from straw on a site near Immingham. In addition I am aware of an application for support of collaborative research and development on the use of United Kingdom-grown crops for industrial use under the LINK initiative. This programme, which is receiving consideration, will be able to cover the necessary research to enhance the potential use of straw.
