To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, further to his answer of 15 May to the hon. Member for Makerfield (Mr. McCartney), if he will provide his latest estimate of the cost of decommissioning the reactors a t Calder Hall and Chapelcross; and what proportion he estimates would fall to his Department.

The responsibility for assessing the costs of decommissioning the reactors at Calder Hall and Chapelcross, and for meeting those costs, lies with BNFL. The Ministry of Defence share of the costs will depend on future usage of the reactors.
