To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what was his estimate of the likely radiation levels in sheep in Wales in the period from the Chernobyl accident to May 1990; and what was the actual level.

In view of the complex factors involved, it is not possible to make meaningful estimates of this kind. The percentage of sheep failing the live monitor test when leaving the restricted areas fell from 14 per cent. in 1987 to 4 per cent. in 1989.
