Nursery Places

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many nursery places are provided by (a) local authorities and other state bodies and (b) private organisations and charities for the most recent date for which figures are available.

Information on the number of nursery places provided is not available centrally. The total number of pupils under five in maintained nursery schools, nursery classes in primary schools and independent schools in England in January 1989 was as follows:
