To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what steps he is taking to increase the proportion of British citizens employed by the European Commission.

Following a recent review of the staffing situation in Community institutions, we have agreed with the Commission a package of measures to improve the recruitment of British nationals. There should be improved publicity on vacancies, competitions and recruitment procedures. We are also establishing a special unit in the Cabinet Office to co-ordinate the recruitment effort and pursue individual issues with the Commission.
