To ask the Secretary of State for Health what is the current annual level of capital spend for which the West Midlands regional health authority is responsible; and what it was for the year 1978–879.

The annual accounts of the West Midlands regional health authority and the health authorities comprising the West Midlands region record total capital expenditure of £27·8 million (cash) in 1978–79 and £82·7 million (cash) in 1988–89 (the latest year available) representing an increase in real terms of some 35 per cent. measured at 1988–89 prices.
