To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what has been the end-of-year surplus/deficit on the national insurance fund in each year since 1979; and what has been the income and outgoings from the fund in each of these years.

The information for the years up to and including 1988–89 is in the table. Final figures for 1989–90 are not yet available.
