To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what information he possesses on the process developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and recently made public, to clean up contaminated soils of hazardous waste substances using a technique called electro-osmosis.

My officials are aware of the MIT process and have been monitoring its progress. There have been commercial applications involving electro-osmosis in the United Kingdom but not so far involving the treatment of contaminated land.
