To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what are the figures in constant value of the output in manufacturing industries in (a) Strathclyde and (b) Scotland as a whole (i) in 1979 and (ii) at the latest date for which figures are available.

Output figures in constant value terms are calculated for Scotland as a whole only in index form. Output figures for Strathclyde are not available. The table shows manufacturing output of Scotland at constant prices, indexed with 1985=100.

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will publish a table, using 1979 at a value of 100, of investment in real terms in manufacturing in (a) Strathclyde and (b) Scotland as a whole for each of the last five years.

Figures are not available in the form requested because there are no separate price deflators for Scotland and the use of United Kingdom deflators for Scotland does not give sufficiently reliable constant price estimates.The following table gives estimates of gross domestic fixed capital formation by manufacturing industry in Scotland at current prices for each year from 1979 to 1987, the latest year for which estimates are available.Separate figures for Strathclyde region are not available.
