During 1989–90 the estimated production of the coal industry, including both deep-mined arid opencast coal, was 95.2 million tonnes.

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy what has been the increase in labour productivity in the coal mining industry since 1983–84.

The output of coal per man-shift in the British Coal Corporation has increased by over 75 per cent. since 1983–84.
