To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what is the number of appeals received under section 5(6) of the Education Act 1981 by local education authority; and what were the decisions taken by the appeals tribunal for each year from April 1983.

Appeals under section 5(6) of the Education Act 1981 are made directly to the Secretary of State. Four appeals have been made since April 1983 and in two cases the local education authority concerned was directed to reconsider its decision not to complete a statement of special educational need. The details are:

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what is the number of appeals received under section 8(6) of the Education Act 1981 by local education authority; and what were the decisions taken by the appeals tribunal for each year from April 1983.

Appeals under section 8(6) of the Education Act 1981 are made directly to the Secretary of State. Nine appeals have been made since April 1983. The Secretary of State found in favour of the local education authorities in respect of seven cases; the remaining two are still under consideration. The details are:
