to ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the latest available figure for homelessness; and what was the figure in 1979.

In the 12 months to March 1990 English local authorities accepted responsibility for securing accommodation for 132,890 households under the homelessness provisions of the Housing Acts; in 1979 the figure was 57,200. However, because of a change in the reporting system between 1980 and 1982, the figure for 1979 is not strictly comparable with those for later years.
