To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many postgraduate students in Wales pursued initial teacher training courses in 1989; and how many benefited from his Department's initiative for meeting the shortfall in Welsh-medium teachers.

A total of 883 post graduate students commenced initial teacher training in 1989. Forty-two of these students are benefiting from the Welsh incentive supplement.
