To ask the Secretary of State for Energy if he will introduce legislation requiring the segregation of production and accommodation quarters on British oil rigs in the North sea; and if he will make a statement.

Existing legislation provides comprehensive controls over the design and construction of offshore installations. This requires, among other things, that accommodation should be placed and constructed so as to afford protection to persons on the installation, and that the certifying authority should carry out an independent assessment of the design and method of construction of the installation.
