To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what information he has as to light rapid transit, metro and tramway schemes under construction or proposed.

The docklands light railway is being extended to Bank and Beckton, the Tyne and Wear Metro is being extended to Newcastle airport and work has begun on the Manchester Metrolink, for which the Government are providing grant. Some 40 other light rapid transit schemes have been proposed or are being considered. These include light rail schemes in South Yorkshire, west midlands, and Avon.
