To ask the Secretary of State for Health what total sum has been made available for the distinction awards to hospital consultants in the northern region in the financial year 1988–89 and in the current financial year; and how much will be available in the 1990–91 financial year.

No specific sum is allocated to authorities for the payment of distinction awards. Health authorities are expected to meet the cost of distinction awards from their own resources.
