To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what assessment he has made of the reduction in the numbers of Scottish students gaining entry to Scottish universities; and if he will make a statement.

Information on the numbers of Scottish students entering Scottish universities was published by the Scottish Education Department in its statistical bulletin "University Students (No 10/H1/1990)" which is available in the Library. I am pleased to say that the numbers of Scottish undergraduates in full-time higher education rose from 53,400 in 1980–81 to 60,300 in 1988–89, a rise of 13 per cent.
