To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations he has received from the Nigerian Government for assistance in training police or military personnel.

At the request of the Federal Government of Nigeria, the United Kingdom has agreed to provide assistance in the training of Nigerian police officers. A joint project is currently being put together, supported by funds from the Overseas Development Administration's technical co-operation programme. The project involves the provision of a team of five British police officers as advisers to the Nigerian police force for two years. Nigerians have for many years attended a variety of military training courses in the United Kingdom. Training assistance is also provided in Nigeria.
