To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he has any plans to improve the gathering of average earnings statistics for the regions of Scotland.

The Employment Department has no plans to change the new earnings survey sampling arrangements at present.

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what the level of average earnings is in the Borders region.

The new earnings survey is the only source of information on average earnings for areas within Scotland. It is not possible to provide an estimate of average earnings for the Borders region because the new earnings survey sample does not give sufficiently reliable estimates for this region.
