To ask the Secretary of State for Employment (1) what percentage of employed workers were employed in the service sector in (a) 1979 and (b) 1989 in the United Kingdom, France and the Federal Republic of Germany;(2) what percentage of employed workers are employed in manufacturing industries in

(a) 1979 and (b) 1989 in the United Kingdom, France and the Federal Republic of Germany.

2 Latest figures available are for 1986.

3 Civilian work force in employment consists of employees in employment, the self-employed and participants on work related Government training schemes. Major divisions of economic activity are defined in the Standard Industrial Classification 1980 (for the United Kingdom) and in the International Standard Industrial Classification (for France and the Federal Republic of Germany).
