To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many doctors were working in the Southern Derbyshire district health authority in (a) 1979 and (b) the latest year for which figures are available.

At 30 September 1982 and 30 September 1989, the latest date for which figures are available, there were 255 and 301 junior doctors in post in the Southern Derbyshire health authority respectively. These figures exclude consultants and senior registrars whose contracts are held by the Trent regional health authority.Pre-1982 figures are not comparable due to the reorganisation and boundary changes which took place in 1982.

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many nurses there were in the Southern Derbyshire district health authority in (a) 1979 and (b) for the latest year for which figures are available.

At 30 September 1979 and 30 September 1990, the latest date for which figures are available, there were 1,420 and 3,950 nurses and midwives, excluding agency staff, in post respectively in the Southern Derbyshire health authority.
