To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a statement on his plans to improve the teaching of English in schools.

The teaching of English will be improved through the introduction of the national curriculum. The attainment targets and programmes of study set out in the statutory orders for English give pupils and teachers clear objectives for reading, writing, speaking and listening, and require a positive and structured approach to the teaching of grammar, punctuation and spelling.
