To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will make a statement on Her Majesty's Government's policy towards the establishment of a separate grading structure for midwives.

Grading for the nursing, midwifery and health visiting professions is determined by the Nursing and Midwifery Staffs Negotiating Council, which agreed the current clinical grading structure, covering all three professions, in 1988. Any changes would be for the council to determine.
